Before he ever stepped foot in Hollywood, Dennis Huffington had already mastered the art of reinvention. Early on in life, he realized that sometimes you need to just press reset and start over from scratch. His experiences from growing up in a New Jersey small town to moving to St. Louis at the age of 17 made him wise beyond his years. That wisdom is reflected in his first book, From Scratch, which chronicles his most recent reinvention into a media personality in Hollywood as well as the life lessons he learned in the wake of his father’s death.
Writing on the book began in the early months of 2016 as a combination of memoirs and self-help principles. The death of Dennis’ father in the middle of the writing inspired him to go bigger than he had planned. From Scratch was more than just one book, the concept applied to multiple phases of his life. The first book in the From Scratch series, Inheritance, sets readers up for the complete chronicles of his life, which he believes have prepared him for greatness on his own terms.
Dennis always had a passion for writing and entertaining which led him to foster those passions through writing contests and creative projects. At age 17, he decided that he wanted to go into broadcast journalism, dreaming of anchoring The Today Show on NBC. His plans were halted when fighting and years of resentment led to a rift between he and his family. A month after graduating from high school, he was homeless and sleeping on a friend’s floor. His aunt sent for him to visit St. Louis for the summer, which ended up being a 15 year stay.
Those 15 years included many personal struggles and successes, which he hopes will inspire others when they read the entire From Scratch series. One of his biggest successes was graduating from college with double master’s degrees. He continues to work on a doctoral degree. Why? Because he has come to far to give up now. With his education, he went on to be a public school teacher, touching the lives of hundreds of students over his 10-year career. His teaching career had been his most influential reinvention up until now. Dennis believes that by being in the media, he could reach millions with his message.
In addition to writing, Dennis is producing a companion web-series also titled From Scratch, to show people what going after your goals and dreams looks like. He is also working on creating a culinary brand that reaches the urban market with cookbooks, recipes, cooking videos, and food reviews. It’s a lot that he wants to do but there is nothing to stop him. As he says on his webseries, Dennis is here to #DOITALL.
